Welcome!

This is the companion blog to Romantic History, and here is where I document and organize research, fashion inspiration, favorite websites pertaining to historic costuming, share patterns, tutorials and techniques and, of course, show off finished costumes! My friend and fellow historic fashion enthusiast Christina has kindly consented to share here, so be sure to look for posts by her - she has a wonderful knowledge of period styles and a delightful way of writing. I am so pleased she has agreed to partner with me in writing this blog!

It seems that more and more historic costuming is gaining widespread popularity. In this modern age where it is fashionable to be "different", it is easy to see why almost anyone can gain inspiration from bygone fashions. The up and coming Steampunk look definitely has helped push along mass public acceptance of a Victorian-esque style. In the stores 1940's, 1950's and even 1960's styles are enjoying a fresh go round. Living historians, reenactors, museum docents and those of us who just like to put on a pretty dress to have tea or go on a picnic all can find so much to love in pre-modern styles. I definitely do!

There is a great online community of like minded costumers and I am thankful I can share in some small way some things I have learned as I have advanced in this delightful hobby. There is still so much to learn, to try, to do. The potential is truly endless! The inspiration never lacks.

Thanks so much for stopping by and helping to spread the love! We've got an amazing heritage and I personally think this is a wonderful way to appreciate those people who came before us. It's all a great adventure and I'm so happy to be part of it.

I enjoy seeing the wonderful gowns & dresses you make!
When I was a little girl I wore dresses a lot, but as I grew older, I felt like they didn't really look good on me any more. I do have three long skirts I wear every now and then.

Your blogs are always so inspiring! Thanks for being a great inspiration!

Oh Jackie! Thank you. :) I think the way you dress really suits your personal style really well but I think you would look beautiful in dresses too!

You might think I'm totally crazy, but someday I'd *LOVE* to get together and we can make you a gorgeous velvety medieval style gown. . .something along the lines of what they wore in the LOTR movies. I think you would look AMAZINGLY beautiful in something like that and you have the perfect complexion and the loveliest hair to pull off the style to perfection. I love this style but it really doesn't look good on me but would look perfect on you, I think. :)

I just stumbled upon your site and I thoroughly enjoy reading about your projects. I am not much of a seamstress unfortunately, I can only confidently sew in straight lines which pretty excludes real clothes (Halloween customs don't count). However, you inspired me to be daring. Thank you.

I absolutely love the words you used to promote historic dress and femininity in this post. I wanted to ask you: Do you wear historic clothing out and about in everyday life or just for historical reenactments?

Sarah said...

Kara, thanks! I will sometimes wear historic clothing out and about for everyday wear, but find myself doing that far less than I used to. I used to do it quite often but have slacked off quite a bit the last few years (and yikes! It's been a few years since I've updated this blog!). I now mostly wear historic clothing to historic events or if we happen to visit a place that is portraying a certain historic era and I feel like dressing up for that.

I just stumbled across your blog a few days ago and I enjoy what I have seen so far. I am new to this kind of thing and I really hope to be able to develop my sewing skills into making my own historical dresses.

Thank you so much for providing all this great information! I love reading all your blogs and was *really* disappointed that Romantic History Blog now requires an invitation. Is there any way to still see it? Thanks!

Custom Greek - Nice historic or vintage clothing. Though people rarely wear such clothes now-a-days but they do make a strong style statement and grabs the limelight.

Does this mean you are no longer doing your Romantic History blog? Or did you change the name of it to something else?

Unknown said...

I too am wondering about the Romantic History blog, this is what shows in my feeds & the one I've followed for years is private.

Sarah said...

Jayne, I apologize about the blog confusion! I have not been able to update my blogs as I have wished to for a while since for some time my sole access to the internet was through my phone. My plan was to slowly incorporate all my constuming posts from my old blog to this one but that hasn't happened yet. So, in the meantime, I have opened up the old blog once again. As I have time (ha!) ;) I will work on updates and culling non relevant posts to shape my old blog into a focused costuming blog instead of the rather disorganized mass of posts it currently is.
